Brian Thompson, Ph.D. — Contributor
Brian Thompson, PhD, is a licensed psychologist at Portland Psychotherapy Clinic, Research, and Training Center in Portland, Oregon, and he also works at the Portland Mood Disorders Clinic. Dr. Thompson draws from treatments supported by research but which emphasize a compassionate understanding of the each person's individual struggles and which help people move towards what is most important to them. He works with a variety of conditions—particularly anxiety—and specializes in the treatment of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. (Click here for his personal website.)
Dr. Thompson received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Montana in 2009 after completing a yearlong predoctoral internship at the Portland VA Medical Center. Prior to earning his doctorate, Dr. Thompson completed a Master's degree in counseling at Naropa University in a program with a strong emphasis on Eastern thought and sitting meditation, and he has completed meditation retreats in several different traditions.
Dr. Thompson divides his time between clinical work and research. He has published several research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. His main research foci are mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions, and trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He contributes to other mental health blogs, including The Art and Science of Living Well, and one for mental health professionals called Science-Based Psychotherapy.
In his clinical work, Dr. Thompson draws mainly from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a versatile therapy with a strong research base. He also offers training and consultation in ACT to other therapists.
