A. Tom Horvath, Ph.D., a California licensed and board certified clinical psychologist (ABPP), is the founder and president of Practical Recovery, a self-empowering addiction treatment system in San Diego. He is past president of the American Psychological Association's Society on Addiction Psychology (Division 50), the world's largest organization of addiction psychologists, and past president of the San Diego Psychological Association. He is the author of Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming Addictions (listed by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies as a “Self-Help Book of Merit”). He has been president of SMART Recovery, an international non-profit, which offers free, self-empowering, science-based addiction recovery support groups, for over a decade.
Kaushik Misra, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist working in the field of addiction medicine. Dr. Misra has published extensively on the neurobiology of addiction and has done research in the areas of alcohol, opiate and stimulant addiction. He is a collaborating scientist at The Scripps Research Institute, a member of the Committee on the Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of California San Diego.
Amy K. Epner, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY18455) specializing in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders and their comorbidity with addiction. She has worked extensively in both clinical and research eating disorder and weight management settings. Dr. Epner also has specialized training in health psychology, including coping with chronic illness, stress reduction, time management, lifestyle changes, and parenting issues. Recently, Dr. Epner has been utilizing her psychological training by applying it to various writing projects. She earned her bachelor's degree at Cornell University, her master's at Brandeis University, and her doctorate at the California School of Professional Psychology-San Diego. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, San Diego Psychological Association, and International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals.
Galen Morgan Cooper, Ph.D., is a specialist in addiction psychology and a consultant to Practical Recovery. As a certified coach Dr. Cooper helps families navigate their lives when addiction strikes as well as helping those with addictive behaviors focus on their goals. She speaks at professional meetings and trainings and to school, parent, and community groups to raise awareness about addiction. Dr. Cooper is the author of the book, A Turmoil Called Home: My Family's Journey into the Hell of Addiction and a play of the same title, based on her memoir. The play is an innovative approach to raising awareness by highlighting the devastating effects of addiction on families. Dr. Cooper performs her show both nationally and internationally.
